Simple Checklist To Prepare Your Heating System For Winter

Fall is the perfect time to winterize your home to make sure that it’s prepared for the cold weather season. This involves reviewing your home’s Heating System and other critical mechanical and structural systems. You need to deal with all these systems before winter comes, so you could enjoy the cold season without having to worry about your house.

Winterize The Heating System

Your home’s heating system is one of the most critical element for a house during winter and the best time to check your heat pump and other heating appliances is during the fall season. It should be no later than the last week of October. Test your system and make sure that it is fully functional.

Heating System Checklist

Test Run – turn on the thermostat and set to heat mode at 83 degrees. The heat pump should turn on and after a few minutes, warm air should start blowing. In case the heat pump is working fine, set the thermostat back to its normal setting. In case the heat pump is not working correctly, you may try to figure out what’s wrong with it yourself. Based on the problem, you may be able to repair it on your own. But you always have the option to call an expert like DuctWorks Heating and Cooling, Inc.

Seasonal maintenance – you can have your heat pump checked by a professional HVAC contractor Myrtle Beach or inspect it yourself. There are some seasonal maintenance tasks that you can do on your own.

Replace the air filter – replace the filthy and old air filter with a new and clean one. The task is pretty easy. Changing the filter provides a free air flow and a much cleaner environment. Every heat pump has its very own set of requirements for its air filter. So be sure to follow the recommendations provided by the manufacturer. Experts recommend that you replace the air filter every month.

Inspect for carbon monoxide leaks – you can easily detect this silent killer using an affordable test badge or an alarm that’s battery operated. In case you find problems, you should call in a professional right away to check and fix the cause of the carbon monoxide leak.

Check The Insulation

Serious insulation projects are not something that you have to do right away before the winter season. A house that seriously needs more insulation should be checked carefully and the work done carefully during the warmer season. But there are a few areas you can insulate when winterizing your home. These include the hot water heater, switch plates and outlets outside the house.

Call DuctWorks Heating and Cooling, Inc. for all your heating and cooling needs. Our team is ready all year round to assist you with your HVAC concerns.
